"I shall here write my thoughts without order, and not perhaps in unintentional confusion; that is true order, which will always indicate my object by its very disorder. I should do too much honour to my subject, if I treated it with order, since I want to show that it is incapable of it" (Pascal, Pensees 373).

"The heritage of values which has been received and handed down is always challenged...To challenge does not necessarily mean to destroy or reject a priori, but above all to put these values to the test in one's own life, and through this existential verification to make them more real, relevant and personal, distinguishing the valid elements in the tradition from false and erroneous ones, or from obsolete forms which can be usefully replaced by others more suited to the times" (John Paul II, Centesimus Annus).
"If there were no obscurity, man would not be sensible of his corruption; if there were no light, man would not hope for a remedy. Thus, it is not only fair, but advantageous to us, that God be partly hidden and partly revealed; since it is equally dangerous to man to know God without knowing his own wretchedness, and to know his own wretchedness without knowing God" (Pascal, Pensees 686).
Cryptography is the study of means of converting information from comprehensible form into an incomprehensible format--the art of encryption. In the past, cryptography helped ensure secrecy in important communications, such as those of spies.
Icon (n): a graphic symbol that denotes a program or a command or a data file or a concept in a graphical user interface; a visual representation of an object or scene or person or abstraction produced on a surface; a religious image on a small panel--venerated in the Eastern Church.

isnt it ironic that we pursue to kill men who commit murder. Its like we think its justified to commit the crime to him
ONLY IN AMERICA
The Church teaches that capital punishment is only permissible if there is the possibility of escape or if the person is a danger to society, even in captivity. Since those cases are no longer an issue in the United States, capital punishment is no longer permissible.
Why, then, do we have capital punishment in our country? If prisoners are not dangers to society while in captivity and it is less expensive to imprison a man for 70 years than to pay for a lethal injection, then for what reason do we pursue this form of punishment? I suspect that the only reason for the death penalty in our country is vengance. The old eye-for-an-eye form of justice. Many victims want to be present at the execution because they expect that "getting even" will give them some sort of closure. The death penalty is just another example of our crumbling society. In the words of our last virtue speaker, "We could turn out to be the next Rome." I believe that we are on our way.
We must PRAY. Pray for victims of violence, that they open their hearts to forgiveness. Pray for those who have committed vicious crimes or who are planning to commmit a vicious crime. Pray that they will practice virtue in the temptation to do a grave evil. PRAY.
As Houston very well points out in his statement "you get yours," the only reason for punishing murderers by death in the United States is vengance.
some years ago i participated in protesting an execution at the state penitentiary. one thing i observed that evening, made my opposition to the death penalty even more concrete-- but for a different reason.
i left that evening with the belief that executing someone in the name of "society" does something damaging to society. --i hope that makes sense.
ps: i have since hired on as a prison guard at this same penitentiary, AND my feelings on the death penalty have not changed. i still oppose it.
It makes absolute sense Herman. Each time we kill someone we divorce ourselves further from our humanity.
